ABSTRACT

The Hopf-Cole transformation turning the strongly nonlinear Burgers equation into the linear heat equation plays an important role in the development of mathematical sciences. In this article the transformation is viewed from historical perspectives. Some open problems concerning the application of the Hopf-Cole transformation are also raised.
