A three-dimensional model of cellular electrical activity

ABSTRACT

The detailed three dimensional architecture of biological tissue and electrodi usion effects of ions have been largely neglected in modeling studies of cellular electrical activity. Here, we develop a model of cellular electrical activity that takes into account both of these e ffects. We derive the system of partial diff erential equations that govern cellular electrical activity and discuss its biological signi cance. This is followed by a brief discussion of numerical simulations and a mathematical analysis of the system of equations.
